School of the Month - St John's Primary School, Barrhead

We are happy to announce that St John's Primary School in Barrhead is our School of the Month. The pupils at St John’s have been working extremely hard to use the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their values to inspire them. Pupils are participating in a number of Olympic themed activities set up around the school for all year groups to engage in.
Elaine O'Donnell, Depute Headteacher at St John's Primary, "This is an extensive programme which fully engages all of our pupils, staff and local community in the legacy of the Olympic and Commonwealth games. We are highly committed to the values of the games, which tie in very well with our school ethos, as a health promoting, Unicef Rights Respecting Level 2 School. Our pupils have a strong voice, every pupil being involved in a Committee to take forward initiatives as well as the voice they have to drive projects within their class."

Inspire-Aspire look forward to receiving St John's entries which will be entered into the national competition. The Scottish Awards Ceremony will be held at Hampden Stadium in Glasgow on 8th June 2012.

Hillpark Secondary School - Case Study

Frank Dixon, teacher at Hillpark Secondary has found success using Inspire-Aspire with his 1st year pupils, "As a school we have only recently become involved with Inspire-Aspire and yet this class of young people are already excited about their learning and have been busily putting together their wall presentation highlighting to other pupils who use the class their involvement in the Inspire-
Aspire competition and the importance of the Olympic and Paralympic values and how they can support their learning."

Gracemount High School - Case Study

According to Adelle Fleming, RME teacher at Gracemount High School, "we have had a wonderful time using the Learning for Life posters this year in Gracemount high school. As a teacher, Inspire>Aspire has helped me to cover a number of Es and O’s in CFE and it also has been great fun and brought a freshness to my teaching. All of our pupils have been inspired in some way and many have been moved and resolved to think far more about the really positive qualities that they have. Many of our pupils found the 'I need to work on' section easy, being well aware of their various failings, but the 'I am good at' section was generally challenging and we have been able to look at our pupils very many positive qualities and help them appreciate these."

School of the Month - Ikusasalethu High School

We are happy to announce that Ikusasalethu High School in South Africa is our School of the Month. The pupils at Ikusasalethu were highly motivated by the programme and inspired to develop their own personal action plan. According to Nhlabathi Njabulo Nomvuyo, grade 10 pupil at the school,
“This is an excellent project. I have learned about the Olympic and Paralympic values. I now know how to evaluate myself. It has helped me find ways of self discovery and of having a bright future.”
Mrs Isabel Gilchrist, who taught the South African pupils about the values behind the Olympic movement, was very impressed with learners’ entries:
“What comes through very strongly is the young people’s passion to succeed so that they can contribute positively in future to the improvement of their community. The spirit of ubuntu is obvious and admirable.”

Broughton High School - Case Study

The Inspire-Aspire poster awards have encouraged pupils to think more deeply about what they value and gives more substance to their own personal ambitions, qualities and sense of well being. According to John Cudlipp, Broughton High School, "the pupils have engaged very well with the process and developed their thinking by using critical thinking skills as well as peer evaluation to inform their viewpoint. Allowing the pupils to investigate this in the life of an individual has also allowed them to identify role models and qualities which they admire and aspire to."

Three pupils commenting about their experience said:
“I think I have learned how to reflect on what I have done in my life and what goals I want to achieve in the future”.
“ I believe I have learned how to look at myself and consider others”.
“I think I have achieved a sense of reflection in my life by looking at both the good and bad aspects of myself”

    Amersham School - Case Study

According to Kelly Cossins, teacher at Amersham School, "the Inspire-Aspire posters that each of my classes are involved in chose a project of their choice based on the Inspire-Aspire theme. For example some of my classes have been looking at the inspiration of the Paralympians and how we can all draw on them for inspiration and they have been putting themselves in their shoes to see how it would affect them at school. We also ran a whole Science day recently for Year 8 where they took part in challenges related to the upcoming Olympics and designed a handball arena, a glove to be used in sailing and an anti doping challenge to work out which of the samples was contaminated.  The students found this particularly inspirational and are aspiring to become involved more in Maths, Science and Engineering."

    Balmullo Primary - Case Study

Fife is one of Scotland’s largest Local Education Authorities and Balmullo Primary School was only the second School in Fife to join the Get Set Network. Located just a few miles from St Andrews, one of the Olympic torch relay sites, everyone at the School is starting to get excited about London 2012. Sophie Land is a Primary 7 pupil at the school and one of the Scottish regional winners of the Inspire>Aspire Values Posters Awards. By taking part in Inspire>Aspire, the school has been able to take an in-depth look at the values behind the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“The Inspire>Aspire posters have been a Launchpad for the school to really get into all the fantastic learning opportunities for the children in the run up to London 2012. The Olympic and Paralympic values help us to develop core aspects of the curriculum and key themes like global citizenship and rights respecting schools. We are thrilled at becoming a Get Set Network School and are now busy making plans for how we can make the most of the learning opportunities as well as enhance physical activity at the school. We are also really looking forward to Sophie being presented her award by an Olympic athlete”.
